Penang Hill

Penang Hill was the first hill station built at the turn of the 19th century by the British Empire in the colonies, well before the renowned hill stations in India, Britain's stronghold in the South East.

At the Lower Tunnel Station
A half hour ride on the furnicular railway from the Lower Tunnel Station is all it takes to alight atop the hill.

The early red and white cable cars were made in Switzerland and the funicular railway was a feat in engineering for Southeast Asia when its train carriage first passed through the steepest tunnel in Penang and also in the world.

The hills of Penang - Western Hill, Tiger Hill, Strawberry Hill, etc. are popular among visitors and locals who flock to the cool hills at weekends and during holidays.

A 30-minute journey by funicular rail takes visitors to the summit of Flagstaff Hill or Bukit Bendera which offers panoramic views of Georgetown and the mainland. Souvenir stalls, restaurants and a hotel are also available at the main recreational area.

For those who enjoy a vigorous walk or fear a funicular ride, there is a very good walking track up the hill. It takes about four hours and should not be undertaken frivolously. The jungle trail begins at the moongate at Waterfall Road, about 300m from the entrance to the Botanical Gardens.

Up there is a beautiful garden. You might also see the gardener, or a dog who doesn't like Japanese tourists...

The funicular rail service begins at 6.30 am and ends at 9.30 pm.
Fare : RM4.00 per adult and RM2.00 for children.
